The ghetto is Kingston’s unwanted area, in fact several areas, new extensions having been established gradually by raising poverty. The poor, the homeless, the unemployed live here. Some have moved here by their own will: drop-outs like the rastas. The ghetto is created by the policy of city-planning and it’s the very negation of city-planning. The ghetto is the embodiment of a confrontation with society. The ghetto is both poverty and freedom. The ghetto is where reggae music comes from.
